The video shows the Planet Ocean ecoSUB in operation in Zanzibar on the SOLSTICE project. It was shipped out and was operational within an hour of arriving at site. ecoSUB (www.ecosub.uk) is a small affordable AUV (Autonomous Underwater Vehicle) developed jointly by Planet Ocean and the NOC Southampton MARS group that can be used out of the box for acquiring scientific measurements over wide areas autonomously, and without the support of large vessels..
It was fitted with a fluorometer and camera. The fluorometer was able to ground truth satellite data and the camera was used to investigate why local fish stocks were in decline. Within one deployment the camera revealed the eco system balance between the fish, the urchin and the damaged corals. As a side benefit the camera spotted a significant number of “ghost” lobster pots which were mapped and later recovered.
ecoSUB can be used in shoals of many vehicles covering large areas economically. We are now fitting advanced underwater navigation and new sensors for pH DO, Turbidity, Oil in water, speed of sound and side scan sonar, all still very affordable compared to alternatives.
